How to Reach Changi Airport and Navigate the Terminals
How to get from central Singapore to Changi Airport by MRT, ride-hail, or taxi, plus a full guide to moving between terminals and Jewel on the Skytrain or on foot.
The MRT to Changi Airport: Faster Than a Taxi at Peak Hour
When the Train Wins
The MRT is your best bet to reach Changi Airport from central Singapore. Take it unless you are carrying four suitcases or it is between 00:00 and 05:30. The journey from City Hall station to Changi Airport station (CG2) takes 35 to 45 minutes and costs between S$1.50 and S$2.50. You pay by tapping a contactless bank card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay directly at the fare gates. No ticket purchase needed.
The first train to Changi Airport on weekdays and Saturdays departs Tanah Merah station (EW4) at 05:31. On Sundays and public holidays the first departure is 05:59. The last train to Changi Airport leaves Tanah Merah daily at 23:18. If you miss that, the last train from Changi Airport towards Tanah Merah leaves at 23:25. You must change at Tanah Merah; the last connecting westbound train departs Tanah Merah at 23:31. Miss that and you are on the night bus.
The Failure Case
If your flight departs before 06:00 or arrives after 02:30, the MRT does not run. Budget for a taxi or ride hail. Do not assume the MRT will get you to a 06:00 departure; the last train from the city may not give you enough check in time.
Ride Hail: Grab, Gojek and Tada at Changi Airport
Grab is the dominant ride hail app in Singapore. Uber does not operate here. Download Grab before you arrive and connect a payment method. A ride from the city centre to Changi Airport takes 20 to 30 minutes and costs S$20 to S$40, depending on distance, time of day, and surge pricing. Surge pricing can double that fare during rain, after midnight, or during the Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend in September. Gojek and Tada are alternatives; Tada often has lower base fares but fewer drivers.
Pickup Points by Terminal
At the airport, ride hail pickup points are fixed. At Terminal 1, go to Basement 1, Coach Stand. At Terminal 2, Level 1, Door 2. At Terminal 3, Basement 1, Door 3. At Terminal 4, Level 1, Door 4. Do not wait at the arrival curb; the driver cannot stop there. If you arrive between 01:00 and 05:00, wait times can stretch to 15 minutes because fewer drivers are active.
Taxis and Private Hire: the Airport Surcharge Rules
A standard taxi from the city to Changi costs S$20 to S$40, but the surcharges shift the number. The flag down fare ranges from S$3.90 to S$4.50 depending on the operator. The metered rate is S$0.25 for the first 10 kilometres, then S$0.25 per subsequent 400 metres. That is the small part.
The late night surcharge adds 50% of the metered fare between 00:00 and 05:59. The airport surcharge applies every trip: S$6.00 at most times, rising to S$8.00 from 17:00 to 23:59 on Friday through Sunday. A phone or app booking fee adds S$2.30 to S$3.30. Add those together and a midnight trip can cost S$40. Book a taxi via the app or call Comfort Delgro to bypass the taxi queue at the airport.
Private Hire Counters
Private hire vehicles are a third option. Pickup points are the same as ride hail: Basement 1 at Terminals 1 and 3, Level 1 Door 2 at Terminal 2, Level 1 Door 4 at Terminal 4. These desks operate 24 hours. They are useful if you need a larger vehicle for four passengers and luggage, but they cost more than a metered taxi without surge pricing.
Night Buses and Late Night Arrivals
If you land after the MRT stops at 23:18, your options narrow. The airport bus service 24 runs from the airport to the city between 00:00 and 06:00. The fare is S$10. It is your cheapest late night option after ride hails. The service runs every 20 to 30 minutes. Six other bus services (27, 34, 36, 53, 110, 858) reach the city during daytime hours with fares of S$2.50, but they stop running between 23:30 and 00:15.
For a 01:00 arrival, take bus 24 or pay for a taxi. Do not attempt the MRT. If you are taking a bus, remember the rule: tap your contactless card on the reader when you board and tap off when you alight. Forget to tap off and you are charged the maximum fare for that route, which can be S$4.50.
The Skytrain: Moving Between Terminals 1, 2 and 3
The Skytrain connects Terminals 1, 2, and 3 in roughly 4 minutes. It runs from 05:00 to 02:30. During peak hours it arrives every 2 to 4 minutes; off peak it runs every 5 to 7 minutes. The Skytrain operates both airside (after immigration) and landside (before immigration).
Terminal 4: The Shuttle Bus Link
If you arrive at Terminal 4, you cannot walk to the Skytrain. You must take the shuttle bus to Terminal 2. The shuttle bus runs 24 hours. During the day it arrives every 10 to 15 minutes; between 01:00 and 05:00 the frequency drops to every 20 to 30 minutes. The ride takes about 10 minutes. The bus stop is outside the arrival hall at Terminal 4. Follow the signs to Shuttle Bus.
Jewel Changi Airport: How to Reach it and When to Go
Jewel Changi Airport is connected to Terminal 1 Arrival Hall. You can walk from Terminal 2 (Level 2) or Terminal 3 (Level 2) via pedestrian bridges in 5 to 10 minutes. From Terminal 4, take the shuttle bus to Terminal 2 first; there is no direct walkway.
Jewel is landside. You do not need to pass through immigration to visit it. If you have a flight departing in less than 8 hours, you can enter Jewel and return through security. If you have more than 8 hours, you can take the MRT to the city, but Jewel alone absorbs 2 to 3 hours easily. The early check in counters open at 06:00 for Jetstar and Scoot at Terminal 1 and for Singapore Airlines at Terminal 3. Use these if you want to drop luggage before exploring Jewel.
Walking Between Terminals: What You Need to Know
You can walk between Terminals 1, 2, and 3 without leaving the air conditioned complex. The walkways are clearly signposted. From Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 is about 10 minutes. From Terminal 3 to Terminal 1 is about 15 minutes. There is no walking route to or from Terminal 4; you must take the shuttle bus.
Airside After Hours
Airside walking routes exist only after immigration. If you are transiting and want to walk, follow the purple signs. The Skytrain is faster for long connections, but walking is reliable when the Skytrain shuts down between 02:30 and 05:00. During those hours, the shuttle bus becomes your only option for moving between terminals landside.
What Most Travellers Get Wrong
The single thing that most often goes wrong here is treating Singapore as a 2 day stopover, arriving at Changi and assuming you can check in 30 minutes before departure. The MRT does not run early enough for a 06:00 flight. The taxi queue at midnight is long if you do not book. And the Skytrain stops at 02:30, stranding you in Terminal 4 if you need to reach Terminal 1 for a connecting flight.
This page suits the traveller who wants a direct, number based plan for reaching and moving through Changi. It does not suit the traveller who wants atmospheric descriptions of the airport gardens or a list of Jewel restaurants. Those are on other pages. Your job is to get from the city to the gate without a mistake. These numbers get you there.
