Three and a Half Hours from Changi to the South Coast

The single most useful fact on this page: a morning arrival into Colombo puts you in Galle or Mirissa by early afternoon on the same day. An evening arrival means you sleep in Negombo. The choice of airline determines which you get.

Colombo is a 3 hour 30 minute to 3 hour 50 minute flight from Singapore Changi. Four airlines fly the route direct: Singapore Airlines, SriLankan Airlines, Scoot, and IndiGo. Between them they operate 50 to 60 flights per week. The key differentiator is not price alone. It is arrival time.

Fares and What They Include

Book in advance off-peak and a low-cost return runs SGD 180 to 280. A full-service return in the same booking window runs SGD 350 to 550. That is roughly a 1:2 ratio. Peak periods (December January, June July) push fares to SGD 500 to 900, a 1:2.5 ratio off-peak to peak. These ranges come from observed booking platform data between 2023 and 2025, excluding fuel surcharge spikes.

Scoot is the low-cost option. It excludes checked baggage, meals, and seat selection. Add a 20 kg checked bag and a meal and the fare gap shrinks. Singapore Airlines and SriLankan Airlines include 30 kg checked baggage, meals, and entertainment. SriLankan Airlines also offers a connection to domestic flights to Colombo Ratmalana for direct hops to Koggala near Galle if timed right, though this is a separate booking.

IndiGo operates on a similar low-cost model to Scoot but with less weekly frequency. Check the schedule for your dates. If you need a morning arrival on a specific day, Singapore Airlines or SriLankan Airlines are the reliable picks.

When To Buy

Book at least 8 to 10 weeks ahead for off-peak dates. For December or July travel, book 4 to 5 months out. Last minute bookings in peak season pay the SGD 500 to 900 band.

Landing at Bandaranaike International and Getting to Colombo Fort

Bandaranaike International (CMB) sits 32 km north of Colombo Fort in Katunayake. The road transfer to Fort takes 45 to 90 minutes via the E03 expressway (toll LKR 400 at the 2025 rate published by the Road Development Authority) or the A3 road. Take the expressway. The A3 road has traffic lights, tuk tuks, and buses that turn a 45 minute run into 90 minutes.

A taxi from the terminal to Fort costs LKR 4,000 to 6,000. Uber and PickMe operate at the airport. PickMe is more reliable. The pickup point is outside the arrivals hall, look for the app-based ride counters. Do not accept a driver who approaches you inside the terminal. Use the official taxi counter or the app.

A morning arrival means you clear immigration and baggage by 09:00 to 10:00. From Fort you catch the 08:35 or 09:35 train to Galle (2 hours, 2nd class LKR 300, reserve online at least 2 days ahead through the Sri Lanka Railways website) or a direct taxi to Mirissa (2.5 hours). A late evening Scoot arrival means immigration and baggage done by 23:30. No trains run. Taxis to Galle or Mirissa at that hour cost more and the driver is tired. Stay in Negombo. The Jetwing Lagoon or Jetwing Beach hotels are a 15 minute drive from the airport. Budget option: the Gateway Hotel Airport Garden, 5 minutes away.

Failure Case: Your Scoot Flight Lands At Midnight

If your Scoot flight is delayed and lands at 01:00, you have zero public transport. PickMe drivers are scarce and surge priced. The on-site hotel desks at the arrivals hall can book you into the Airport Garden by Negombo for around USD 50. Walk out of arrivals, turn right, 8 minutes on foot. Do not attempt a taxi to Colombo Fort at that hour. The road is poorly lit and the driver may demand renegotiation mid trip.

Entry Requirements and Connecting Beyond Colombo

Singapore passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travel. Apply through eta.gov.lk. The fee is USD 50 for non SAARC nationals; Singapore is not a SAARC member. The ETA is valid for 30 days from arrival and permits double entry for tourism. Apply at least 3 business days ahead. Most approvals come within 24 hours but some are held for manual review. Do not book non refundable accommodation until the ETA is issued.

Colombo works as a short feeder to the Maldives. CMB to Male (MLE) is a 1 hour 15 minute to 1 hour 30 minute flight. Direct carriers are SriLankan Airlines, Emirates, and flydubai. Return fares booked in advance range from USD 180 to 350, based on 2023 to 2025 booking platform data. Combine Singapore to Colombo with Colombo to Male on a single itinerary and you may save on the Colombo leg of the ETA, but check visa rules for your nationality for the Maldives separately.

Monsoon Awareness

The southwest monsoon (Yala) runs May to September and dumps rain on Colombo and the southwest coast. The northeast monsoon (Maha) runs November to February and hits the east and north coasts. Inter monsoon periods March April and October November bring unpredictable showers. January and February are the driest months in Colombo. If your Singapore to Colombo flight is in May, plan for afternoon rain in Galle and Mirissa. The rain is not continuous but it will shift your beach time to mornings.
